Make more than just a resolution this year...

“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.   Matthew 5:33-37

It’s that time of year again that people make resolutions for the New Year.  They choose this time to try and stop a bad habit or to start a good one.  Last year, my resolution was to stop drinking soda.  It was largely due to my dentist telling me that the acid in diet soda eventually led to my root canal.  Needless to say, I made it 5 months until my first drink of soda.  According to Forbes Magazine, only 8% of people kept their resolution last year.  (Good to know, I was not alone).  What resolution are you hoping to keep this year?  Here is the list of the top 5 people made for 2014:

#1 – Lose weight
#2 – Getting organized
#3 – Spend less, save more
#4 – Enjoy life to the fullest
#5 – Staying fit and healthy

This year, I have decided not to do any resolutions.  Don’t get me wrong, any of these listed above are not bad and are even needed in my own life.  However making a new year’s resolution seems to be too short sighted.  This year, I am staring down my 40th birthday.  As this has been rolling around, it was made me think more about eternity and leaving a legacy.  As I turn the corner in the 2nd half of my life, I want to make sure I am investing into eternity and not focusing on the temporary.  Although I could use to drop another 20 lbs, it’s not going to be my driving force this year.  It will take a back seat as I seek the Lord’s guidance for what He has next in store for me.

My ultimate goal is to hear “well done, good and faithful servant.”  Although resolutions are not a bad thing, choose what’s better this year.
